Abstract
A major challenge when studying functional materials formed via hierarchical assembly is to understand their behavior on a variety of length scales and timescales. To address such complex non-equilibrium processes, it has become increasingly important to introduce experimental approaches capable of studying the mechanical response of the material on a macroscopic level as well as on the nanoscale. Here, we will discuss how in situ multimodal characterisation of these materials can be obtained by combining rheological testing with small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS/WAXS). By doing so, we demonstrate that we can obtain bulk-level mechanical information on the materials, while simultaneously studying the evolution of their nanostructures under deformation or shear using SAXS. We will further show how we can add complementary probes such as polarised light imaging (Rheo-PLI-SAXS) and support experimental conditions such as controlled temperature and humidity.
