Abstract:
Focused ion beams (FIBs) are versatile tools for imaging, milling, deposition, and modifying materials at the micro- and nanoscale. This webinar introduces the fundamentals of ion sources and beam optics, explores key applications such as cross-sectioning, TEM sample preparation, focused ion beam-induced deposition (FIBID), and defect engineering, and discusses how to choose the right instrument for a given task. A special focus will be placed on Helium Ion Microscopy (HIM), highlighting the capabilities of helium and neon beams for high-resolution imaging and nanoscale fabrication, alongside their limitations. Finally, we will explore how RIANA can connect researchers with European research infrastructures and specialised ion-beam capabilities.
